Part 10 of 15

Bill was big in the United States, but when he went to England he became a huge star. Why do you think he was embraced more in England than in his country?

Well, first of all, there are many factors. Mostly because the British love people making fun of America, especially Americans. I mean, from the video stuff that I sell and the responses that I get, anytime an American makes fun of Americans the British eat it up. If an American makes fun of the British, they hate it, they get very defensive. I think it's because it's a small country. I think Bill was so embraced there, not just as a comic, but as a politician. Here's this young kid from Texas going over there who has got a pair of ball so large you had to put them in a Garden King wheel barrel. And he was saying all these things about the government in a funny forum that no one had ever really heard put that way before.

Another reason is because people have said the same things, but maybe not as a comedian. He was able to package himself up as like, "We're going to see the circus tonight. Oh my God, it's Bill Hicks!"

Did Bill prefer playing in England or United States?

Either one. I know he probably, definitely, at the very end, enjoyed doing the big gigs in England. Who wouldn't love going up on those giant stages?

I guess he probably preferred England, but at the same time, I think he thought something about the rough and readiness of recording in front of the American audiences was much better.
