Mr. Qbert

Dear Michael:

Thank you for contacting the Perrigo Company.  We do no animal testing on over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs or vitamin products.  Drug product active and inactive ingredients are on the "GRAS" list (FDA's list of "generally recognized as safe" ingredients).

Perrigo had previously performed a limited amount of animal testing on our cosmetic products. We felt these tests were a minimum requirement in order to insure that the products were safe for human use and were in compliance with the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act which requires, in a rather non-specific way, that products must be safe for human use.

With the August 1999 sale of our personal care business, the Perrigo Company no longer markets cosmetic products and consequently now does no animal testing.   We suggest that you contact your local Humane Society or Animal Rescue.  One of these organizations would be able to house your rabbit and find it a good home.

Sincerely,

Mr. Qbert

Dear Beth

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry to hear that you no longer need the services of Mr. Qbert. Would it be possible for you to hold on to him until you design products which might require to be tested on animals? Mr. Qbert is very low maintenance and you can give him your vitamins to keep him healthy.

Please let me know, in the mean time I will contact the Humane Society to see if they can help, although I do not think they perform any animal testing.

Thank you for your time,

Michael Page

Mr. Qbert

Dear Michael:

The Perrigo Company, which is located in Allegan Michigan, does not plan to do any animal testing now or in the near future since we have sold the Personal Care Division.

We recommend you contact the House Rabbit Society at www.rabbit.org or 732-583-0278.  They are an animal rescue organization that could find a good home for Mr. Qbert.

Good luck!

Please Help

Dear Sir / Madam

I was wondering if you can help me. my name is Michael Page and I own a Fuzzy Lop rabbit named Mr. Qbert. I got him for Christmas 2 years ago. Mr. Qbert is a beautiful bunny who is playful and house trained. I play with him everyday. Unfortunately my family and I are moving to a new building where they don’t allow pets, so Mr. Qbert can't come with us. My mom says that we have to put him to sleep since we can’t find anyone who would want to take him.

Over the last few weeks I have been trying to give him to a company which performs tests on animals to see if they can take him. Since I know that this will help the company design better products which me and you both use. Unfortunately I am not having much luck.  Would you know what I can do with Mr. Qbert? He is friendly and soft and loves people once he gets to know them.

Thank you for your time, I hope you can help.

I will send you a post the will help you find a way to find a new home for Qbert, if you really cannot keep him.

You've got to be kidding me.  If this is some sort of cheap ruse to get me to take your rabbit now that you have decided to abandon him, then trust me, it won't work.  You know as well as I do that such "companies" hire out their testing to laboratories that use New Zealand White rabbits for their genetic similarity.  In addition, the rabbits used for such experiments are often subjected to unspeakable tortures.  It would be *better* for Qbert to be put to sleep than to be subjected to anything like this.  I do not believe for a second that you have actually tried to do this, but if you really have, then I think perhaps you should donate yourself to that company, as well.

Then why on earth would you consider giving him to a testing laboratory (which I think is a bald-faced lie on your part, and makes me *less* inclined to help you, not more)?  There are ways to find him a safe home, though the best option, of course, would be to keep him with you.  A pet security deposit is usually an option at most places that "do not allow pets" and I will be happy to provide you with any documentation on the harmless, clean nature of rabbits for you to use to negotiate with your new landlord.

Re: Please Help

Dear Dana:

Thank you for writing back to help me with Mr. Qbert. I actually got your name from Perrigo corporation who referred me to you after I tried to donate my rabbit to them for their tests. (I included their message below) I was not aware that companies only use New Zealand white rabbits for experiments. Mr. Qbert is not from New Zealand but he is sort of white.

I think if Mr. Qbert  could talk he would tell us that he wants to help design better health and beauty products for large Fortune500 companies. So I am sure he would not mind being part of a few experiments if it meant better gels and lotions for all of us.

I had my mom talk to the new landlord about what good pets rabbits are, but the landlady said that she thought that rabbits transmitted shingles and rickets and would not want rabbits around. I even had my mom bring a picture of Mr. Qbert with her but the lady said that she could tell by the picture that Mr. Qbert was shingle infested. I am not sure what shingles are but I hope Mr. Qbert does not have them since he looks very healthy to me. Do you think a corporation  would take Mr. Qbert for their experiments if he had shingles? Well I hope you can help.

Do you think I can donate Mr. Qbert to a high school for their dissection class, he is bigger than a frog.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Michael Page
