It seems that more and more Hollywood
celebrities are embracing the teachings of Scientology. Created by the writer L. Ron
Hubbard, the legion of Scientology's followers continues to grow, drawing into the fold
many celebrities such as, Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and many others.
Because we at Fade to Black realize that these celebrities cannot possibly be wrong, for
after all they are on television, we decided to take a closer look at Scientology and its
teachings.
Our first step was to order Dianetics. We discovered that a lot of Dianetics' principles revolve
around the various associations we make in our daily lives and how those associations
later come back to keep us from becoming all we can be. Although the concept has been
borrowed by other self improvement 'gurus', Anthony Robbins for one, the ideas are
nevertheless interesting and makes the book worth checking out.
However, one soon realizes that Dianetics is a highly
strategic ad campaign luring its prey into one Scientology course after the next, after
the next, which costs money and more money, and even more money. And its not only the
financial issues which seem a bit wacky, but its some of Scientology's basic ideas that
seem to get wackier and wackier. For example, who knew that 75 million years ago a wicked
extraterrestrial tyrant named "Xenu" solved the galaxy's overpopulation problem
by placing the "undesirables" in a volcano and blowing it up with several
hydrogen bombs? We had no idea
.
It seems that in order to fully
appreciate the teaching of L. Ron Hubbard, in addition to a considerable amount of cash,
you'll have to also hand over the part of your brain which is responsible for logical and
rational thought. Although an intriguing prospect, and one we deliberated intensely for
many days, we came to the conclusion that if you are gullible enough to derive the meaning of life based
upon the writings of a fiction writer, why not pick someone who is at least fun to read?
With that in mind we decided to compare the writing of L. Ron Hubbard to that of Dr.
Seuss.
The number of similarities we found
are downright eerie:
